Wherever you go in the world, you’ll see the local kids dribbling around a cherished ball inspired by whatever athlete is central to their city. There's something so human about adult pick-up games too, strangers able to cooperate by using just a ball. A bouncing receipt, marked with each pass and shot attempt, accumulating collaborative mileage. Where I’m from, that central figure was Kobe Bryant. Hundreds of used basketballs from inner city schools were collected, salvaged, and hand-stitched together everyday for 4 months. As word got out of this effort, PE teachers and kids themselves began collecting basketballs for the project, helping me with my shot attempt by giving me theirs. This communal act of kindness and hope came at a time I needed it most. I started making this piece when I decided to stop all substances and separate from the environment I knew. A project elaborate enough to fill the time one gains from abstinence. One step, one basketball, and one stitch at a time… The full assemblage is made up of 08 individual sections, each depicting a key aspect of a man’s life: Precious moments with his daughter, the very lines that dictated his movements on and off the court, business changes and ventures…When arranged harmoniously these sections together create the shape synonymous with the man that motivated each of the young dreamers that used the very materials that make up the piece. I maintained complete abstinence from any substance or stimulant ever since working on this piece…It’s been 5 years and growing https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=d5DT4joTa8A
